About the Department
The Transportation Worker 4 Welder works as a professional welder within the construction and maintenance of highways and the Bridge Department. Performs advanced level, specialized skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways and bridges. The selected applicant will be responsible for mentoring lower level employees. As an advanced level welder, they will be fabricating steel using metal arc welding equipment, welding metal re-bar or piling together to strengthen concrete forms or extend pilings in construction of new bridges, along with cutting and grinding structural steel. Responsible for maintaining the welding equipment, including periodic inspection and adherence to safety protocols as well as maintaining the following: machine lathes, horizonal and vertical milling machines, drill presses, sharpeners, threader machines, and wheel lathes. Will be reading and working from blueprints and drawings. Will assist lower level employees in advanced equipment repairs and repairing equipment in the field by welding components, when necessary. May operate motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, and tandem-axle truck. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required.
The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). However, a Transportation Worker 4 Crew Chief is excluded and the applicant will not be placed within a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program.
- In the area of assignment of Welder, a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

Position Duties
Transportation Worker 4 – Welder
- Repair or construct bridges with fabricated steel using metal arc welding equipment.
- Welds metal re-bar or piling together to strengthen concrete forms or extend pilings in construction of new bridges.
- Cut and grind structural steel.
- Separate weld seams.
- Maintain welding equipment, including periodic inspection and adherence to safety protocols.
- Repair equipment in the field by welding components, if necessary.
- Re-machine universal joints and gears which are rebuilt by welds.
- Maintains and operates machines including lathes, horizontal and vertical milling machines, drill presses, sharpers, threader machine, and wheel lathes.
- Read and work from blueprints and drawings.
- Machine parts.
- Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
- In the area of assignment of Welder, a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.
Minimum Qualifications
• Knowledge of advanced level methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.
• Knowledge of the operation of trucks equipped to reach under bridges.
• Knowledge of the Division of Highways Equipment Management System.
• Knowledge of the standard safety procedures of the Division of Highways.
• Knowledge of the nomenclature use and maintenance of welding equipment and cutting equipment.
• Knowledge of acetylene, propane and other gases, characteristic dangers and uses with welding and cutting equipment.
• Knowledge of welding rod specifications as outlined by American Welding Society (AWS).
• Knowledge of basic mathematics.
• Knowledge of melting temperatures of various metals used in bridge maintenance repair.
• Knowledge of materials, design and assembly procedures used in welding.
• Knowledge of the type of rock, aggregate and soil found in core drilling.
• Knowledge of safety practices for core drilling work.
• Skilled in the manipulation of levers and other controls that move articulating booms.
• Skilled in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor driven equipment.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs.
• Ability to train lower level mechanics.
• Ability to read and layout plans.
• Ability to cut and fit metal component in the rebuilding or repair of equipment or high steel structures.
• Ability to regulate fuel pressures gauges on gas welding and cutting equipment.
• Ability to climb high steel structures.
• Ability to operate welding equipment used in highway bridge maintenance.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Ability to operate a drilling rig, water pump, air compressor and related equipment to drill for core samples.
• Ability to operate a heavy truck to transport drilling rig and related equipment.
• Ability to assemble drilling rig and related equipment.
• Ability to classify types of rock, aggregate and soils from core drilling.
• Ability to perform minor maintenance on drilling rig and related equipment.
• Ability to maintain simple records (timecards, work repair orders).
Other Qualifications
REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION: No formal education required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Welder: Five (5) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in welding.
- Special Requirements for TW 4 Welder: Must hold an Iron Worker’s Card or within six (6) months of hire, pass the DOT Welding Certification is required in area of Welding.
- No Substitutions.
- Promotional, only for TW 4 Welder : Five (5) years of combined experience in Bridge Construction/Repair and/or Welding OR Certification as a welder by the Department of Transportation may substitute for the required five (5) years of welding experience.
